fashion designer arabella ramsay

There's no denying it. It's a great story. Arabella Ramsay left country Victoria to study textile design in Melbourne. Her final graduate project garnered so much interest from buyers and magazine editors that she quickly became the next big thing. Since then Arabella has not only shown at Mercedes Fashion Week but has also studied fashion in Paris for two years. In 2006 she opened her first boutique in High Street Armadale.

Which five words best describe you? Quirky, sensitive, grounded, intuitive, creative.
What was your first job/career and what path have you taken since? I worked in a chicken shop when I first moved to Melbourne. Coming from the country I was used to chooks, but the smell of cooked chicken - aghhhhh!!! I now rarely eat chicken because of this... since then I started up my own label and haven't looked back.
What's the best lesson you've learnt along the way? Stay true to who you are and to what makes you happy.
What's your proudest career achievement? Starting up my own business in the crazy world of fashion and opening my own store in Armadale.
What's been your best decision? Saying "yes" when my boyfriend asked me to marry him.
Who inspires you? My family, other artists, musicians, and my 91-year-old nanny... who still wears high heels!
What are you passionate about? Cooking, drawing, 70s fashion, interior design books... actually all books in general.
Which person, living or dead, would you most like to meet? My great-great uncle, Hugh Ramsay; he was a famous Australian painter.
What dream do you still want to fulfil? Open up a store overseas - either in New York or Paris, publish a book, put on an exhibition of my drawings and also travel into space.
What are you reading? I'm reading two books at the moment: The Girl with played with fire by Stieg Larsson and My stroke of insight: a brain scientist's personal journey by Jill Bolte-Taylor - one fiction, one non-fiction... I like to mix it up.

I can't wait until Arabella opens up a shop in Sydney. It would be very very dangerous.
